Over the last two decades, homeschooling has flourished as a viable alternative to public or private school education. The trend in providing education for children in the home environment began to emerge in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The concept was not eagerly embraced by public school systems and their administrators at the time. As a consequence, homeschooling families were put through rigorous requirements in order for their children to qualify for academic credit. Today, homeschooling has gained acceptance and is regularly recognized as a legitimate approach to educating students. In fact, it is almost on par with the traditional form of private education and private school is not conducted online but rather in individual or small class settings.
Homeschooling should not be confused with a newer trend in education - cyber schooling, otherwise identified as distance learning. Advocates and developers of cyber schooling environments have borrowed the concept of online learning that is being offered by a growing number of colleges and universities in the United States. Although cyber schooling education is generally carried out in the home, classes are conducted almost exclusively online with the aid of a computer and Internet connection. Many homeschoolers use computers however teaching in the homeschooling
