The Virginia judicial system was put into place to uphold state law and ensure that disputes are handled justly and economically. Currently, there are four levels of the Virginia judicial system.

1. The first level of the judicial system is the Supreme Court of Virginia. This court is the final court system of the state and is comprised of a Chief of Justice and six additional justices.
2. The second level of the judicial system is the Court of Appeals. This court handles all appeal cases filed within the state and is comprised of 11 judges.
3. The Circuit Courts are included in the third level of the Virginia judicial system. Within this level, there are 31 different circuits comprised of 120 courts.
4. The final level of the Virginia judicial system is comprised of two different types of courts.
   1. The first court within this level is the General District Court. These courts are present within all 32 districts of the state and are considered to be trial courts with a limited jurisdiction over civil and criminal matters.
   2. The second court within this level is the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts. These courts are also present in all 32 districts of the state. They are considered to be trials courts with a limited jurisdiction over juvenile and family civil and criminal matters.

This level of the Virginia judicial system is considered to be the highest level of trial courts. The circuits and the courts of this level of the judicial system also handle all general jurisdiction cases.
