The American Court System

The American court system is comprised of numerous networks of legal systems that work at the local, regional, state and federal level. This is a system that is responsible for civil and criminal processes that happen in this country, though it may be more well-known for the criminal proceedings that help to reinforce the laws of society. The American court system relies on the legal foundation set by the Constitution of this country and often falls back on precedents set by the U.S. Supreme Court, the hallmark of justice in this land. The court system in America is responsible for giving American citizens (or those that are not but find themselves navigating the system nonetheless) due process when accused of a crime or party to a civil matter of some kind. Additionally, thousands upon thousands of Americans work within the system, building a career on the legal aspects and inner workings of the American court system.

It is a constantly evolving system, as laws are created by the legislative branch and courts are charged with enforcing these laws. Additionally, as laws and society change, so does the American court system to a certain extent. Length and types of punishments dealt out to offenders by the court system change with societal and legislative norms and the way in which this system is navigated is a creative exercise constantly being challenged by legal professionals, novice and experienced.
