In June 2008, Arizona salesman Travis Alexander was killed by his ex-girlfriend Jodi Arias, stabbed multiple times and shot in the head. The resulting trial of Jodi Arias received significant media attention in the United States through early 2013, before Ms. Arias was sentenced to life in prison. The Jodi Arias trial was sensational in that it was one of the first media circuses in the age of social media.

Jodi Arias' trial began in December 2012 in Maricopa County. Arias claimed that the killing was in self-defense, that Alexander had become enraged after she dropped the digital camera. In May 2013, Arias was found guilty, but the first sentencing phase ended in a mistrial. Eventually, Jodi Arias was sentenced to life without parole. Further controversy surrounded the Jodi Arias trial when her artwork began appearing on eBay, part of a range of social media, including a Twitter account in her name. As a result, the Jodi Arias trial was frequently described as a circus, drawing in thousands via live courtroom feed of the trial.
