Crimean War Declared by the Ottomans

In 1853, Russia attempted to invade several Ottoman provinces along the Danube River including Moldavia and Wallachia. Crimean War Dragged On

While the war dragged on, political opposition in Britain led to direct negotiations with the Russians, resulting in the Treaty of Paris of 1856. It was also the first war in which the telegraph provided near-instantaneous reports from the battlefield. The immense Russian war debt forced that nation to sell Alaska to the United States.
