The Cold War began after the Yalta Conference in February 1945, before the conclusion of World War II. It marked 46-years of military and political division between the former Soviet Union (Russia) and the world’s communist nations and the United States and Western allies.
The Cold War
In February 1946, six months after Germany and Japan surrendered, ending the war, Joseph Stalin officially declared that communism was in direct conflict with the democratic movement. Winston Churchill, in turn, delivered his famous “Iron Curtain” speech, accusing Stalin of establishing political and physical borders between Western and Eastern Europe. The result became the formation of the Eastern Bloc. By 1949, the Soviet Union had developed atomic weapons and the Peoples Republic of China was formed as single-party communist nation, a result of the Cold War.
