There can be little doubt that the world is being affected by climate change. The vast majority of scientists have concluded that the planet is undergoing unfathomable changes in the atmosphere, changes that could affect every living thing on Earth. Climate Change ReportEach year, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issues a report on the current state of climate change. The Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) was issued for 2014.

In addition to the full report, the IPCC issues a shorter synthesis report for policymakers. According to the 2014 IPCC climate change report, each of the past three decades has been warmer than any decade since 1850, with the period of 1983 to 2013 being the warmest in the Northern Hemisphere for the past 1400 years.

The climate change report cites increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the result of industrialization. Much of the carbon pumped into the atmosphere in the past century and a half has settled into the ocean, producing a 26 percent increase in oceanic acidity.

The 2014 climate change report also noted the following:

  • The rapidly shrinking ice sheets over Greenland and Antarctica has produced a rise in sea levels.
  • The report projects an average increase in surface temperature of anywhere between 0.3 degrees and 4.8 degrees centigrade by 2100.
  • The end result of climate change will be more frequent hot and fewer cold temperature extremes and high variations in precipitation.
