Modern presidents, following their retirement, open their libraries within a few years. George W. Bush was no exception, leaving office in 2009 and opening his center in 2013. Architect Robert A.M. Stern, dean of the school of architecture at Yale, Bush’s alma mater, was selected to design the library, and ground breaking took place on November 16, 2010. Dedication took place on April 25, 2013 and was attended by all living former presidents as well as current President Obama. In order to avoid controversy, none of the speakers that day mentioned Iraq, perhaps the single most defining event of the Bush presidency.
