Spain is one of the major nations of Europe, and an important contributor to the history of Western art. From El Greco to Goya to Picasso, Spanish art has stood at the forefront of artistic expression since the late Middle Ages. However, for several centuries before 1492, Islamic Moors ruled Spain, who brought their own unique styling to Iberia.
Spanish Art Inspirations
Spain, as a cohesive political entity, emerged in 1492 with the unification of the crowns of Castile and Aragon. At this time, most Spanish art was heavily influenced by styles from the Netherlands, known as the Hispano-Flemish school. Spanish art, as a distinctive style uninfluenced by other regions, including Italy, developed during the post-Renaissance school known as Mannerism. El Greco (1541-1614) is considered to be the epitome of Spanish Mannerism.
By the 16th century, Seville became the cultural center of Spain, attracting many artists, dominated by Caravaggio whose naturalistic style influenced the development of the three Golden Age masters of Spanish art:

- Zurbaran
- Velazquez
In the late 18th and early 19th century, Goya dominated the Spanish art world, while Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was perhaps the most famous artist of the 20th century, revolutionizing all of art through Cubism and Abstract modern art. Salvador Dali and Joan Miro also demonstrated that Spanish art was a force to be reckoned with in the modern age.
