Tennyson's Poems

In 1850, Tennyson shot to literary fame with his poem “In Memoriam A.H.H,” written in response to the death of his best friend, Arthur Henry Hallam. It has been said that Queen Victoria, who grieved over the death of her husband, Prince Albert, took great comfort in reading’s Tennyson’s work. Therefore, when William Wordsworth died in 1850, the post of Poet Laureate was offered to Tennyson. Tennyson held the post, a lifetime appointment, until his death in 1892.

As Poet Laureate, Tennyson was required to produce poems for specific state occasions, such as the arrival of Princess Alexandria of Denmark for her marriage to the future King Edward VII. While much of this work has been described as “uninspired” by critics, Tennyson did produce one of the most famous poems ever in 1854, “The Charge of the Light Brigade,” following the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War. Tennyson continued writing poems until he was in his eighties, and was the first person given a peerage for writing. He is buried in Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey.
