Deirdre Marie Capone (2012) tells the story of the Capone family and Al Capone, her uncle. So ashamed of her birth surname, she never admitted to it until recently when she published a book about her uncle. One story she relates concerns his friendship with Ben Hecht, screenwriter of Gone with the Wind, and Damon Runyon who wrote Guys and Dolls. He had asked them to help him write his autobiography but by the time they were free enough, Capone was in jail for tax evasion and so it never got written but, between family members and authors, the story of Al Capone has been told.

- Al Capone (1899-1947) was immersed in crime activity from childhood when he joined the James Street Boys and then the Five Points Gang.
- He came by his nickname, Scarface, early in life when he was slashed across his left cheek in a barroom fight, leaving a prominent scar.

Al Capone led a life of crime and seemed impervious to the law. He could not be convicted of crime. It was only in 1931, when convicted of tax evasion that he began to serve a jail sentence. He was released from prison in 1939 and died as an obscure ex-convict in 1947.
